I started doing dialysis transport in 2012. At the time, I did not really grasp what it meant for patients. Today, I understand better.
A patient I have been driving for three years lives in Aubagne. His session is at 7am at the La Casamance clinic, three mornings a week. For dialysis transport prescriptions, the nephrologist issues a transport voucher. The CPAM covers the trip. I bill the health insurance directly under my agreement. The patient does not advance any money.
I provide trips to several facilities: La Timone hospital in Marseille, the Clinique de l'Étoile in Aubagne, the Pont-de-l'Étoile dialysis centre. I know the entrances, the car parks, the outpatient access points. It avoids stress in the morning.
Families trust me. Some contact me themselves to organise the schedule when the patient cannot do it alone. I note everything.
A detail few people know: if a patient needs help going down the stairs or settling into the vehicle, I help. It is not in any official job description. It is just what we do.
