August 15th in Bandol is Assumption Day, for the sailors, for local families, for holidaymakers spending mid-August on the Var coast. A day between Catholic tradition, summer atmosphere and packed beaches, in one of the finest ports in the western Mediterranean.

This year, the official Fêtes de la Mer programme is scaled back: the sea procession to the île de Bendor has been suspended for 2026 (decision by the parish and the town). However, several highlights are confirmed:
- 10:30am, Open-air Mass on the port, altar set up near the harbourmaster's office. Tribute to sailors and blessing of moored boats (no sea procession this year)
- 12:30pm, Public aperitif offered by the town hall on place de la Liberté
- 3pm, Beach activities on Bandol's main beach: traditional jousting, children's games, SNSM lifeboat demonstration
- 9pm, Variety concert on the port (free entry)
- 10:45pm, Fireworks launched from the jetty, visible from all around the port and beaches
What you need to know to enjoy the day
Bandol on August 15th means 30,000 extra people in town according to council estimates. Beaches are claimed by 9am, town centre car parks fill by 11am, and restaurant terraces need to be booked several days ahead. My advice: arrive early if you want the beach in the morning, or aim for a late lunch and enjoy the entertainment from 3pm.
For the fireworks at 10:45pm: the best spots are the jetty (but packed), Renécros point (quieter, side view), or the Bendor heights for the lucky ones with a boat. From l'Anglade or Renécros beaches, you also get a beautiful view.
Getting there and back on August 15th
Traffic and parking information is communicated by the organisers and the town hall before the event: check it before you set off. MR Taxi drops you as close as possible and picks you up at the exit, from all towns in the region, at the guaranteed maximum price announced at booking. If the place is hard to reach, I will give you an easily accessible meeting point.
