On a Sunday at 11:15pm, my phone rang. A woman living in Gémenos, whose husband had just had chest pains. The firefighters had already come, the husband was stabilised, but she needed to join him at the La Timone emergency room. I arrived at her place in eighteen minutes.

Night is the time when transport supply shrinks drastically, and when, nevertheless, certain needs become the most urgent. Here is how I work between 7pm and 7am, and for whom.

Three moments when people call me at night

1. The medical or family emergency

Accompanying a relative to the emergency room. Joining a parent who has just been hospitalised. Picking up a patient discharged from a late shift. These calls come without warning and need an immediate answer.

I do not replace the ambulance service or the firefighters. If it is a life-threatening emergency, call 15 or 18, always. But for the in-between situation, the one where you need to get somewhere fast without being in immediate danger, I am there. My number is registered with several on-call pharmacies in the area; when they have a customer with no means of transport at midnight, they sometimes call me directly.

2. The return from a night out or a festival

Concerts at the Dock des Suds, evenings at La Friche Belle de Mai, shows at the Criée theatre, summer festivals, all of it finishes late, and everyone wants to go home at the same time.

This is also when booking ahead makes all the difference. I do not work by algorithm: I take bookings in advance. If you call me in the late afternoon for a return at midnight, I note the time and address, and I am there, at the agreed place.

For events outside Marseille, the Chorégies d'Orange, Jazz à Salon, the Lacoste Festival in the Luberon, Les Suds in Arles, the Nuits de la Citadelle in Sisteron, the return is often the real question mark. Car parks empty slowly, country roads are dark, and official shuttles do not always go as far as your hotel. I have done returns from Orange after the Chorégies at 1am. It is a two-hour drive, but if the concert was worth the trip, and the Chorégies always are, a comfortable taxi return is the right end to the evening.

3. The flight that lands at 2am or takes off at 5am

Marseille Provence Airport stays active early and late. A flight landing at 1:47am, a connection to catch departing at 4:30am, these are trips I do every week. At night, the airport is less crowded, the road is smoother, and a driver booked in advance saves you the taxi queue that can stretch when arrivals come one after another.

Marseille at night: what you really need to know

The city's reputation is sometimes scarier than reality, especially for visitors who have only seen Marseille in the headlines. Since 2012, I have driven thousands of times at night in every district: around the Old Port, the Corniche Kennedy, Bonneveine, the 7th, the 8th. It is calm. The city centre stays lively without being aggressive. Residential areas are quiet.

What changes at night is not the risk, it is the availability of transport. Buses stop. The metro closes. An independent taxi you can reach directly makes complete sense at that moment.

Beyond Marseille: PACA at night too

In peri-urban areas, night transport is rare. In Gémenos, Aubagne, La Ciotat, Cuges-les-Pins, Cassis, Auriol, or further along the Huveaune valley, the Pays d'Aix, Salon-de-Provence, the Var hinterland, booking your taxi in advance remains the safest solution. In these areas, I travel regularly at night: returns from medical on-call duty, transfers to the La Timone or Hôpital Nord emergency rooms, airport drop-offs for early-morning flights.

If you live in these areas and need a reliable return at night, for an event, on-call duty, an emergency, this type of trip makes up a large part of my night-time activity.

The night rate: what is regulated

The night surcharge applies from 7pm to 7am, in line with the national taxi agreement. It is not the driver who invents it, it is regulated. I systematically tell you the rate in force before departure, no surprise on the bill at the end of the ride.

My per-kilometre rate is regulated: it does not vary with demand. No extra charge at 11pm on a Saturday night, no doubling of the price on festival nights. Only the night surcharge provided for by the agreement applies between 7pm and 7am.

Book in advance, even at night

The best advice I can give for the night is not to wait until the last moment. A text message in the late afternoon to lock in a midnight return takes thirty seconds for you, and guarantees I will be there at the agreed time.

For unforeseen emergencies, I can be reached directly by phone, that is why I am available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is not a marketing argument: it is the reality of my job since 2012. Nights, public holidays, Sundays at 4am, I have always answered.

Why I keep working nights

At first, it was clients taking early flights. Then medical transport. Then families calling because a relative was hospitalised and they did not know how to get around. Over time, I understood that night was often when people most needed reliable, immediate transport, and when supply was at its scarcest.

That is why MR Taxi stays available when you truly need reliable transport.

Reach me for a night ride

For recurring night trips, medical on-call duty, regular event returns, weekly flights, the dedicated driver option can be arranged in advance: see the Chauffeur hire page for how it works. To lock in a specific date or ask about a night trip, the simplest is to contact us directly.

And if it is for tonight, call. I pick up.
