There are cities you drive through, and others that stop you in your tracks. Martigues is one of them. Close to Marseille, along the Étang de Berre, this town built on three islands linked by bridges unfolds a quiet, almost secret beauty that few travellers take the time to really discover. I wanted to take my clients there, and I have talked about it at every opportunity since.

The Miroir aux Oiseaux: the beating heart of the town

It is in the Île district that the magic fully works. The coloured façades, ochre, pink, faded blue, are reflected in the calm waters of the Baussengue canal. Flat-bottomed boats, moored under the windows of the houses, rock gently with the water. You immediately understand why this spot, nicknamed the miroir aux oiseaux, has captivated generations of painters. The light, at golden hour in the late afternoon, is truly unreal, neither Marseille nor Venice, something uniquely Martigues.

Félix Ziem and the artistic soul of Martigues

This painter of Burgundian origin settled in Martigues in the 19th century and never really left, at least in the memory of the town. His museum, set in a fine house in the historic centre, traces a dazzling career devoted largely to the lights of Provence and the golden reflections of the "Provençal Venice". An hour spent there, and you will come out with an irresistible urge to sit by the canal and watch time go by.

The Sainte-Madeleine de l'Île church

Built in the 17th century in a generous Baroque style, the Sainte-Madeleine de l'Île church has watched over the district for centuries. Its slender bell tower is reflected in the canal, an image you will have trouble not photographing, whatever happens. Inside, the calm is total, almost solemn. A welcome pause after the walk by the water.

Exploring the surroundings

Martigues is not only a town to visit: it is an ideal base for exploring a region often overlooked by tourists. The Côte Bleue, with its wild coves reachable on foot from the seafront, offers breathtaking panoramas. Fos-sur-Mer and its impressive industrial complex create a striking contrast with the gentleness of the canals. And if you have the time and the desire, the Giraud salt pans in the Camargue, their pink waters, their flamingos, their almost mineral silence, probably deserve the longest detour.

My advice to really enjoy it

Avoid weekends in high summer if you want to find the miroir aux oiseaux without too many people. On weekdays, in May or September, the town regains its slow, authentic rhythm. Allow at least half a day, ideally a full day to wander without watching the clock. From Marseille or Aix-en-Provence, MR Taxi takes you there and picks you up whenever you wish, so you can enjoy the visit without any return constraint.
