There is a place in Arles where, for a few days each July, musical boundaries disappear entirely. Les Suds à Arles has been bringing artists from every continent together since 1996 in some of the city's most extraordinary ancient spaces: the open-air Roman Theatre, the Archbishop's courtyard, the avenue of Roman sarcophagi at the Alyscamps, the cloister of Montmajour Abbey. The encounter between these world musics and 2,000 years of heritage creates a magic all of its own, this is one of Europe's truly great world music festivals, and one that has managed to stay intimate and human in scale.

31st edition, 13 to 19 July 2026

This year the festival enters its 31st edition. Seven days, more than 60 concerts and events, five historic venues. The 2026 programme confirms everything that defines Les Suds: musical ambition, a genuine mix of generations, and a conversation between traditional roots and contemporary creation.

Confirmed headliners:

  • Gaël Faye : the author of Petit Pays and the album Mauve Jacaranda, performing at Les Suds in a set that weaves together mixed-heritage rap, Burundian warmth and Franco-African songwriting
  • Camélia Jordana invited by Sofiane Saidi : an exceptional meeting between the French singer and the master of modern raï (collaborator of Mehdi Haddab, Ramzy Aburedwan)
  • Jordi Savall and Hesperion XXI : the great Catalan master of the viol, one of the world's foremost figures in baroque and medieval music, with a Mediterranean programme
  • Fatoumata Diawara : the wassoulou voice from Mali, championed by Damon Albarn and Herbie Hancock, one of the most significant African artists of her generation
  • Mari Froes : the young face of contemporary Brazilian music, modern samba and MPB
  • Jowee Omici : electro-world fusion that has been one of the most anticipated acts on the 2026 festival circuit
  • L'Antidote and Aïta Mon Amour : two Francophone groups bringing chaâbi, gnawa and contemporary chanson into dialogue

Les Suds formats, beyond the concert

What sets Les Suds apart from other music festivals is the breadth of its formats:

  • Soirées Suds au Théâtre Antique : the big ticketed evenings, capacity ~3,000, flagship programme
  • Moments Précieux : intimate concerts in heritage spaces (Archbishop's courtyard, Museon Arlaten)
  • Nuits Suds : late-night programming at the Alyscamps, a freer and more festive atmosphere
  • Salons de Musique : recital format for small groups (100–150 seats), with direct proximity to the artists
  • Siestes Musicales : free, in late afternoon, lying on the grass
  • Apéros-découvertes : a short set by an artist before their main evening concert, free, in the public squares

Several of these formats are free or very affordable (€10–15). My advice: alternate one paid headline concert with a few Moments Précieux or Siestes, that is how you truly feel the spirit of the festival.

Workshops and master classes, 13 to 17 July

Les Suds is not just a spectator festival: 40 workshops and master classes run alongside the concerts. Dance (flamenco, kathak, samba, African dance), voice (polyphony, Pulaar singing, Bosnian sevdah), instruments (oud, kora, Brazilian percussion, qanun) and lifestyle (world cuisines, storytelling). Accessible prices (€40–120 per workshop), online registration from April. This is one of the least-known but most rewarding dimensions of the festival.

The five festival venues

Knowing the venues is half the Les Suds experience:

  • Théâtre Antique : the main stage. 3,000 seats, Roman tiers, open to the sky
  • Cour de l'archevêché : a listed heritage space, capacity ~600, exceptional acoustics
  • Museon Arlaten : the Provençal ethnography museum, intimate rooms for the Salons de Musique
  • Alyscamps : the Roman necropolis, its avenue of sarcophagi running along the chemin de Saint-Trophime, for the Nuits Suds
  • Abbaye de Montmajour : a 12th-century Benedictine cloister 3 km from Arles town centre, an iconic venue for certain opening concerts
