Twice a year, France opens the doors of monuments usually closed to the public, free of charge or at reduced price. The European Heritage Days, every third weekend of September, are a unique opportunity to push open the gate of a military fort, climb a lighthouse, or descend into a Roman cellar. In Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, one of France's richest regions for listed heritage, these two days take on an exceptional scale.
Sites not to miss in PACA
In 2026, Heritage Days will take place on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September. In Marseille: Fort Saint-Nicolas, Abbaye Saint-Victor, the Prefecture. Nearby: the Thoronet and Sénanque abbeys, Tarascon Castle, the Glanum archaeological site. In villages: medieval olive mills, isolated Romanesque chapels. Most sites offer guided tours by passionate volunteers.
