There are evenings that stay with you forever. I drove clients to the Chorégies d'Orange for the first time a few years ago, and when the opening notes rang out against the mur de scène, that 37-metre stage wall listed as a historic monument, the only Roman wall of this scale still standing in Western Europe, I understood why this event draws spectators from all over the world every summer. The 2026 season runs from 30 May to 18 July at the Théâtre Antique d'Orange, with a lyric and symphonic programme that once again makes the Vaucluse one of the world's great capitals of open-air opera.
Full 2026 programme
This edition brings a succession of landmark evenings, all at the Théâtre Antique unless otherwise noted:
- 1 June : Musiques en fête, a gala evening broadcast live on France 3 from the Théâtre Antique. Accessible programming for a wide audience; limited free admission.
- Saturday 4 July, 9:30 pm : Verdi's La Traviata, fully staged. An exceptional cast: soprano Nadine Sierra as Violetta, tenor Javier Camarena as Alfredo, and baritone Ludovic Tézier as Germont, under the musical direction of Paolo Arrivabeni. This is the operatic event of summer 2026 in France, Tézier is the most listened-to Verdi baritone of his generation, and Sierra is a regular guest at the Met and Vienna.
- Tuesday 7 July : Philippe Katerine Symphonique. The French singer revisits his catalogue with a full symphony orchestra. A more accessible evening, ideal for anyone wanting to discover this extraordinary ancient venue without the weight of grand opera.
- Monday 13 July : Cendrillon by the Ballets de Monte-Carlo. Jean-Christophe Maillot's company, one of Europe's most prestigious, presents its retelling of the fairytale. A high-calibre family show.
- Saturday 18 July : Concert Cinéma by Renaud Capuçon. The violinist performs the finest film music (Morricone, Williams, Desplat, Yared) in a programme for all audiences. A beautiful close to the season.
Understanding the Théâtre Antique's acoustics
The Théâtre Antique d'Orange is one of the three best-preserved Roman theatres in the world, alongside those of Mérida and Aspendos. Its defining feature: the stage wall (frons scaenae) is entirely intact, and it is this wall that creates the extraordinary acoustics. A voice projected from the stage, unamplified, carries clearly to the very last row, 100 metres away. For opera productions, amplification is nonetheless partial (reinforcement for ensembles and certain voices) because the 8,000-seat capacity exceeds what an unamplified voice can comfortably serve.
Practical tip: if you are an opera enthusiast and want the purest acoustic experience, aim for central-tier seats (categories 1–2). For first-timers or those watching their budget, the upper side seats offer excellent value and a striking panoramic view of the stage and the starlit sky.
Practical information for performance evenings
- Times: performances at 9:30 pm (occasionally 9 pm depending on the evening). Doors open 1 hour before. Allow 1h15 in advance for security checks and seating.
- Dress code: no strict requirement, but evening dress is the custom for the grand opera night (4 July). A cardigan is advisable even in July, the mistral can blow cool after midnight.
- Dining: plenty of restaurants within a 10-minute walk of the theatre in Orange's historic centre. Reservations are essential on performance nights. My suggestion: dinner before 7:30 pm so you can take your time.
- Tickets: on sale since 15 December 2025. Category 1–2 seats go quickly, especially for La Traviata. If an evening is sold out, "limited view" seats are often still available at accessible prices.
