The Camargue begins where the Rhône splits into two arms to flow into the sea. Expanses of marshes, rice fields, salt pans and wild beaches, a territory that looks like nothing else in France. When I take clients there for the first time, I always see the same reaction: a mix of astonishment and calm. It is a place that slows down time.

Why the Camargue is not like the Provence next door

Not far from Marseille, the Camargue seems light years away. You enter along a straight road through rice fields (yes, rice is grown in the Camargue), you cross fields where wild black bulls graze, you pass herds of white horses raised free. And then the flamingos appear, by the dozens, by the hundreds, sometimes by the thousands depending on the season.

This horizontal, luminous, strangely silent landscape contrasts totally with the postcard Provence you know next door. This is the France of the gardians (Camargue cowboys), the manades (bull ranches), the whitewashed reed huts. A world apart that deserves a full day.

My complete circuit in one day

Stage 1, the Pont-de-Gau Ornithological Park (morning)

Departure from Marseille early in the morning. First essential stop: the Pont-de-Gau Ornithological Park, just before Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. 60 hectares of marshland with observation trails, hides and educational panels. You are guaranteed to see flamingos (the colony counts several hundred resident birds), but also herons, egrets, storks and birds of prey.

The park can be visited at your own pace. The best times: early morning (before 10am) or late afternoon (after 5pm).

Stage 2, Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (lunch)

The spiritual capital of the Roma people, Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is a white village that ends in the sea. A huge beach, a fortified 12th-century church (climb onto the roof terrace for the view over the whole delta), and a timeless atmosphere. The Roma pilgrimage in May and October is the event of the year in the region.

Lunch at one of the many restaurants serving gardianne de taureau, a typical Camargue dish (bull slowly simmered in red wine, served with Camargue rice). It is tasty, it is local, it is what you should eat here.

Stage 3, Salins du Midi at Aigues-Mortes (afternoon)

In the afternoon, head for Aigues-Mortes along the coast road. On the way, the Salins du Midi unfold their pink lagoons, salt has been produced here since antiquity by evaporation, and the pink colour comes from microscopic algae that grow there. At the foot of the Aigues-Mortes ramparts, a little tourist train lets you cross the salt pans (to be booked on arrival).

Then visit the Aigues-Mortes ramparts, one of the most beautiful medieval fortified walls in France, built by Saint Louis in the 13th century as an embarkation port for the Crusades. You walk around them on foot, up high, with a 360° view over the delta.

Stage 4, visit to a manade (late afternoon, optional)

For those who want to extend the day and get a real taste of Camargue life, several manades (ranches raising Camargue bulls and horses) open their doors to visitors in the late afternoon. Demonstrations by gardians on horseback, presentation of the bulls, sometimes a local aperitif on the terrace of the manade house. Booking recommended.

Return to Marseille at the end of the day.

The best seasons

  • April-June: nature in full activity, nesting birds, mild temperatures. The ideal period.
  • September-October: autumn migrations, rice harvest, magnificent golden light. An excellent time.
  • July-August: very hot, lots of mosquitoes at dusk, heavy crowds. To avoid if possible.
  • November-March: fewer birds but a superb off-season atmosphere, perfect for photographers.

Available options

  • Full day from Marseille (8-10h): quote depending on vehicle and programme
  • Half day, Saintes-Maries only
  • Combined Camargue + Aigues-Mortes day
  • Van up to 8 passengers available

To estimate your ride from your starting point, use our private transport page, which calculates the fare in real time based on your address and chosen time.

I can put you in touch with a partner manade for the optional visit, and recommend a gardianne restaurant to your taste (touristy or more authentic).

The last word: the Camargue is lived at its own pace, not yours. That is exactly why it is precious. Booking on 06 98 46 63 34 or instant quote.
