If you ask me what the unmissable cultural event of the Provençal summer is, I will answer without hesitation: the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles. Since 1970, every summer, the Roman city transforms into an open-air gallery. The ancient streets of Arles become backdrops for images from around the world, portrait, reportage, contemporary art, archives, spread across dozens of exhibitions in chapels, disused factories, palaces and industrial sheds.
Exhibitions all over the city
In 2026, the Rencontres will run from early July to late September. The opening week in early July is the most electric: private views, performances, debates. Plan at least a full day, ideally two, to experience the festival properly.
Getting to Arles from Marseille or Aix
Traffic and parking information is communicated by the organisers and the town hall before the event: check it before you set off. MR Taxi drops you as close as possible and picks you up at the exit, from all towns in the region, at the guaranteed maximum price announced at booking. If the place is hard to reach, I will give you an easily accessible meeting point.
