Toulon — Giens Peninsula & Hyères: private taxi tour

An easy, bright tour, perfect for a morning. We leave Toulon and reach Hyères in half an hour. The medieval old town, still ringed by its ramparts, reveals its steep lanes, its Porte Massillon and its Saint-Paul collegiate church standing on the rock. The Olbius Riquier gardens, with their 150 years of palm trees and bamboo, are a delight. I let you wander. Then on to the Giens peninsula. We drive along the salt road, a narrow tongue of sand separating the salt pans from the lagoons, where by some miracle two almost deserted beaches stretch on either side. At the end, the peninsula itself: a small rocky point, the Madrague harbour, a view of the Golden Islands (Porquerolles in the distance), a coastal path set among the pines. Back via Carqueiranne, an authentic little harbour where fishermen still unload their morning catch. The harbour cafés, the boats rocking, the view over the bay.
