Salon — Alpilles & Les Baux: private taxi tour
About 4h15 · Half day
A half day in the Alpilles, the small white chain that Van Gogh painted like a blaze. We leave Salon and reach Aureille in twenty minutes. This little village backed against the Alpilles, overlooked by the ruins of its medieval castle, offers an intact image of rural Provence: olive groves, fountains, a square shaded by a centuries-old mulberry tree. Then Les Baux-de-Provence, a princely town of the 11th century clinging to its rocky spur. The citadel is truly worth the visit: reconstructed catapults, guardhouse, a 360-degree panorama over the Alpilles and the Camargue in the distance. Finally Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Wednesday Provençal market overflowing with cheeses, tapenade and lavender, intact ramparts, elegant lanes, a refined atmosphere. Van Gogh lived for a year at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, and the little path lined with the fields he painted is a few minutes from the centre. Back to Salon through the valley.
