Martigues — Camargue & Étang de Berre: private taxi tour

This is an off-the-beaten-track tour, where you see the Provence of wetlands, less known but fascinating. We leave Martigues and head to Fos-sur-Mer. From the heights, the view takes in the largest industrial port in southern Europe, with refineries that seem out of scale, but also the still-wild beaches of the Grande Salinière, the lagoon and, on a clear day, the Alpilles on the horizon. We continue to Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, a small port at the river mouth, where fishermen share their quays with the cargo ships heading up to Arles. A rough, genuine atmosphere. Finally we enter the Camargue via Salin-de-Giraud. The salt pans where salt has been harvested since Antiquity, pink flamingos by the hundreds in the brackish water, black bulls, white horses grazing freely.
