Carry-le-Rouet — Martigues & Étang de Berre: private taxi tour

A morning in a painter's setting. We leave Carry and in a quarter of an hour we reach Martigues, the Provençal Venice crossed by three canals linking the Mediterranean to the Étang de Berre. The Île de Brescon, the historic heart of the town, reveals the Miroir aux Oiseaux with its colourful boats and pastel houses: it is one of the most photographed sites in Provence. The Sainte-Madeleine church, a 17th-century Baroque gem, hides a painted ceiling and gilded altarpieces behind a sober façade. I let you walk in the lanes and have a coffee facing a canal. Then we head to Fos-sur-Mer. From the heights, the view takes in the largest industrial port in southern Europe, with its out-of-scale refineries, but also the wild beaches of the Grande Salinière, the lagoon and, on a clear day, the Alpilles on the horizon.
